Grief is the natural reaction we experience when we suffer a significant loss in our lives. The term was introduced in his essay Mourning and Melancholia by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who describes it as “(…) a reaction to the loss of a loved one or an abstraction that replaces them, such as our homeland, freedom, or an ideal.”6 According to this definition we can then apply it to different types of situations that cause us a sense of loss and therefore produce suffering. The time that one lives after a loss generally is known as a “time of mourning.”

 When we split up because of a divorce, we separate from the loved one with whom we had hoped to share the rest of our life. When the relationship dies, one often feels lost or without direction. This is a death that many go through in life. The death of a marriage is very difficult for many to cope with because, generally, when you first contemplate marriage, you assume it is for life. Even if it lasted only a few years, a failed marriage is a source of disappointment and loss. Sure, there are cases where some can be happy having gotten divorced, as my friend Benjamin told me. He believes that divorce is not always synonymous with loss. And this is true.

Transform Your Loss is a great book. As an example, it brings out real like stories and examples of how people transformed their particular losses. As a radio talk show host I know how important it is to bring real life stories out if you want to connect with people. And that is what Ligia does so well in this book–she wholeheartedly connects with people showing them ways they can help themselves. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand and deal with any type of loss in their lives.

The author conveys genuine empathy as she talks to readers about what they are feeling, and I found myself trusting her completely as a caring guide who wants to provide grieving people a positive approach to help them move ahead toward finding the strength and hope truly to transform their lives.
